Why Be a Trustee of VMM International

VMM International is a Volunteer Mission Movement and international development organisation with 50 years of experience sending professional volunteers on mission to partner organisations in communities around the world. A faith-based organisation, founded in 1969 with the objective of offering lay missionary opportunities to non-clerical volunteers, our mission has grown to envelop all those who are committed to the volunteer ethos and to working in partnership with our local civic, community and faith-based partner organisations; and thus, is open to volunteers of all faiths and none who share, and are willing to commit to, this mission.

How VMM International Works in International Development

Community Safeguarding in Sierra Leone

VMM International projects partner in action

Our volunteers typically include experienced, philanthropic professionals who are, for example, on a career break, retirees and those who work within the international development sector; who lend their expertise to lead on development projects and are willing to volunteer for one-to-two years at a time. Opportunities also exist to contribute on a short-term basis. These can be an opportunity, typically though not exclusively for students, to gain experience in their chosen field while at the same time contributing on projects serving vulnerable communities, as well as learning from a deeply enriching cultural exchange by immersing themselves in a practical context of global justice and citizenship. Our partnership approach to international development, provides the perfect setting for this mutual learning exchange and experience, not just to donate, but as our mission statement underlines, to “share who we are, and not just what we have”.

Being A Trustee of VMM International

However, whether two months or two years, not everyone has this time to spare. Yet, there is another way that you can share your expertise and philanthropic goodwill, and that is by becoming a member of the board of trustees of VMM International. The board is comprised of members from the UK and Ireland, participating in approximately three virtual meetings (via GoToMeeting or similar) and attending three face-to-face meetings per year. Due to a majority of members from the UK, two of these meetings are usually held in or around Liverpool and one in Dublin. It is also the case that currently all members are male. As an equal opportunities organisation, in keeping with our mission and values of equality, inclusion and respect, and to broaden the diversity of perspectives and input into the oversight and direction of VMM International, we wish to address the balance of board members. If you have a commitment to international development and social justice or to a charitable faith of any creed and are willing to share your expertise on our board of trustees, contributing toward the work of the life-changing projects in which we are involved, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Further Information on Being a Charity Trustee

Becoming a charity trustee can seem daunting at first. The Wheel, the Irish national association of community and voluntary organisations, charities and social enterprises have set out the main areas of responsibility in straightforward language in order to help you understand the role and responsibilities of a trustee to help you. We hope this will encourage you to join us to help VMM International  steer us all toward our vision of “a world where we live in the shelter of one another”.
